FAQ

Q: Why do I get a message that Time Machine data is not available?
A: Back-In-Time searches all mounted disks that contain Time Machine data. If it can't find a backup of the item you're looking for, you will get this message. The item may have been excluded from Time Machine backup, or may be located on a volume that isn't backed up. Also, if you back up to a remote disk such as a Time Capsule, you need to mount the disk and open the disk image that Time Machine creates on it.

Q: Why does Back-In-Time advise me to disable Time Machine during restoration?
A: When Time Machine is actively running a backup, it constantly adds and removes items from the backup disk. If you are restoring a single file or folder by drag and drop, this generally won't cause problems. But if you plan to restore an entire disk or a large amount of data, it's better to stop Time Machine first and turn it back on later, using Time Machine Preferences.

Q: I replaced my Time Machine disk with a larger one. Can I recover the data on the old disk?
A: Yes. Back-In-Time searches all mounted disks containing Time Machine data, and presents both old and new disk contents. You can recover and copy data from the old disk as well as the new one. If you restore from the old disk to your Mac, then this data will be backed up by Time Machine to the new disk.
